Stem Cell Therapy Procedure
Before the procedure, you will have had a complete orthopedic evaluation and review of your medical history to assure you can benefit from stem cell transplants. Below is a brief outline of what to expect. The stem cell procedure is minimally invasive.
1. Harvesting Bone Marrow – Derived Stem Cells
Bone marrow-derived stem cells are collected from the back of the pelvic bone by aspiration, drawing the bone marrow out. This is a minor procedure that requires only local anesthetic to make the procedure more comfortable.
2. Preparing the stem cells for transplant
The harvested stem cells are spun to separate, isolate, and concentrate the stem cells in the lab, to increase their numbers and potency. They may be enriched with PRP, to provide growth factors and chemicals for cellular communication. The solution provides stem cells in numbers greater than your body is capable of providing.
3. Stem cell Injection
The specially prepared stem cells are injected into the injured or damaged tissues in the joint. Injection is performed under the guidance of ultrasound or fluoroscope to assure the precise delivery of the stem cells to the target area.
If the targeted area needs protection after injection, the patient may need to wear a brace for a short time.
5. Optimal healing
The stem cells go to work transforming into the type of cells needed for repair, and releasing growth factors to slow degeneration and inflammation for optimal healing.
There is a slight risk of bleeding and infection, and some temporary discomfort during and immediately after the procedure which will resolve quickly. The entire procedure takes about two hours.
