What is facet arthropathy?

Facet arthropathy describes arthritis that develops in the spine’s facet joints. The facet joints connect the vertebrae (the bones of the spine) to one another and facilitate bending and twisting motions. Arthritic facet joints have a lack of cartilage to cushion them, leading to more friction in the joints that can cause back pain and stiffness. This friction can also lead to the growth of bone spurs, which may press against a nerve root and trigger shooting pain, muscle weakness, and numbness.

How is facet arthropathy treated?

Treatment for facet arthropathy focuses on relieving symptoms and improving mobility. Arthritis is often a product of the body’s natural aging process, so it can’t be cured or reversed. Thankfully, there are several conservative approaches that can help many patients effectively manage their symptoms, slow the degenerative process, and get back to the activities they enjoy. Many physicians recommend a combination of:

  • Physical therapy
  • Hot/cold therapy with a heating pad and ice pack
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Gentle stretching and low-impact exercise

At Physicians Rehabilitation, we take a multidisciplinary approach to facet arthropathy treatment to ensure the best possible results for our patients. Our conservative techniques, including physical therapy, spinal decompression, and minimally invasive nerve block procedures, help many patients find meaningful relief from symptoms without surgery or long-term use of potentially addictive narcotics.
